Swindon Folksingers Club

Half a Century of Traditional Folk Music in Swindon

The Club

Founded by Ted & Ivy Poole and friends in 1960, Swindon Folksingers’ Club has a long history of keeping traditional music alive in this busy town in north-west Wiltshire. From its beginnings in the folk revival, the club has seen Swindon’s character change from railway town to a modern centre of new technology and financial services; but through it all, Swindon Folksingers’ Club has remained as a friendly, relaxed and welcoming place where anyone can come and sing or listen.

What's on?
Click HERE to see what's on in our current programme.

(You'll need Adobe Acrobat reader to see this - get a free download here).

Highlights for autumn 2011 include:

•14 Oct - ANDY CLARKE AND STEVE TYLER
•28 Oct - SPECIAL NIGHT commemorating the late Colin Bathe
•4 Nov - JODY KRUSKAL
•11 Nov - GAVIN DAVENPORT
•25 Nov - BOB LEWIS

•2 Dec - PHIL CALLERY
•16 Dec - CHRISTMAS PARTY

The club runs a mixture of “club nights” – informal singarounds for floor singers – and guest nights (the guest spots are about an hour and a quarter, with a break). You can come along and just listen, or you can sing a song or play a tune. Our material is mainly traditional, but with a large smattering of songs from the current folk scene, as well as other stuff.

We welcome performers of all abilities. The atmosphere is friendly and encouraging, so come along and have a go! It doesn’t matter how good you are – we all had to start somewhere!

Where & When
We currently meet at Milton Road Club, Milton Road, SN1 5JA (the club has a licensed bar), on Friday nights from 8:15 – 11:00. (During July and August there are no official events, but you should find a few of us there anyway!)

Milton Road Club is on the south side of Milton Road, between the Canal Walk Bridge and Tennyson Street. This is buried in Swindon's one-way system, so we recommend you use Multimap or Google Maps - even if you have satnav. Enter the postcode and figure out your route beforehand! (Google's Streetview will be helpful too.)

When you get inside Milton Road Club, turn to your left and you'll see the Function Room, where we meet, in front of you.

A reasonable place to park is Brunel West car park in Farnsby Street - you can easily walk to the club from there.

Contact Us
The club is currently run by Eric Stott. Call on 01793 521301, or you can e-mail us.

Admission
Membership of Swindon Folksingers' Club is free, but regular visitors are requested to take out annual membership of the Milton Road Club (£10, or £5 unwaged).

Guest Nights: £4.50, concessions (student/OAP) £3.50

Club Nights: £3.50, concessions £2.50.

Swindon Folksingers’ Club is a not-for-profit organization.

Seend Acoustic

Location Rusty Lane, SN12 6NS Seend, United Kingdom
About bringing locals together through song and verse, acoustically of course!
Seend Acoustic Club launched 7th September 2010 at The Seend Community Centre in the upstairs function room.

Club evenings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month and is hosted by Malcolm Shipp of The Sodburys.

All are welcome, audience and musicians alike. If you can play an instrument, sing a song, recite a poem or tell a great joke then please come along and join us. It is de...liberately called an acoustic club, not a folk club so expect to hear a wide range of musical styles.

Most evenings will have a featured paid act that will do 2 x 35 minutes and the rest of the time will be taken up by floor spots which are given out on a first come first serve basis, depending on how many turn up you may get to play 3 songs, it might only be 1 though!

Format is simple, arrive by 7.30 - 7.45 and put your name down if you want to perform and we'll try to fit you in.

Except for evenings where national acts are booked, the entrance fee is £2, this may rise to £3 in 2011. Same price for audience and floor spot players.

There is a raffle at each event which is claimed to be the biggest raffle of any music club in Wiltshire with between 8 and 10 prizes always on offer no matter how many turn up.

By paying to get in this entitles you to one night temporary membership to Seend Community Centre and thus allows you to avail the use of the bar for drinks at club prices. There are well kept real ales, traditional cider and everything else you'd expect.

Oh, and we usually hand round free chocolates too, we're just nice and friendly like that.

Please come along soon and enjoy the relaxed living room attitude of this club!

On Saturday 12th November we are again involved with THE ARC THEATRE and promoting an evening called MILLS & CHIMNEYS. Performed by a group from Derbyshire this show should have quite a lot of similarities to our own local mill story. Then on Saturday 3rd December we have our ANNUAL VILLAGE PUMP NIGHT FOR DOROTHY HOUSE. This night usually sells out and the provisional list of artists who will be performing should give us yet another special night. The Arc’s technical wizard is looking into recording the evening to produce a CD to raise some more money for Dorothy House. Our plan is to get all of the audience to give us their names, these will then be included on the CD as ‘backing singers’ More news on this night in the next VPNews.
One way and another 2012 is looking like being a very busy year for us at THE VILLAGE PUMP. The folk club has yet more top names booked and on Saturday 7th April our very good friends SHOW OF HANDS are performing at The Royal Albert Hall for a forth time. The last show there was amazing and I for one will be there. Tickets are available from The RAH Box Office, 0845-401-5034 or on line, follow the links form SOH’s website. Ridler Coaches are running some coaches up to the big city for the concert, more details on www.ridlers.co.uk.
SHOW OF HANDS have agreed to be patrons of our 2012 VILLAGE PUMP FOLK FESTIVAL on July 20th,21st and 22nd. As I write this I am trying to complete the first wave of artists to join SHOW OF HANDS, SETH LAKEMAN, 3 DAFT MONKEYS, JENNA WITTS, ETC. As soon as I have any more information I will be sending out a VILLAGE PUMP FOLK FESTIVAL NEWS. In the meantime its worth keeping an eye on our new website WWW.VILLAGEPUMPFOLKFESTIVAL.CO.UK The new festival site is outstanding. There is a bar there, so do pop along and have a look. It’s the WHITE HORSE COUNTRY PARK in Westbury. I’m in negotiation with some big name artists, most of which I can’t divulge at the moment but a certain clown from Easterton may be seen and a national treasure from Bradford On Avon may well be bringing along The MGPlayers

Plus loads more yet to be confirmed keep an eye on WWW.VILLAGEPUMP.ORG.UK for the latest news. As you can imagine many of these nights will be sell-outs, so to be sure of a seat it’s a good idea to book tickets. We are looking at ways of administering ticket sales at the moment, in the meantime just get in touch with me on the number below.
